PROJECT DETAILS
The sleek and efficient M/V Island Home ferry was built in 2005. What exactly is the M/V Island Home? It’s a ferry that has been serving the Woods Hole-Martha’s Vineyard route since her maiden voyage in March 2007. This state-of-the-art passenger and vehicle ferry can make the 7-mile crossing in 32 minutes at her top speed of 16 knots. She can carry up to 1,210 passengers and accommodate 60 vehicles with an additional 16 on hydraulic lift decks, for a total of 76 vehicles.
So where does SIT come into play? SIT (successor to Huber) supplied the lift deck and ferry freight doors to this double-ended ferry. The client had very specific requirements for the projects at hand in order for them to operate effectively and efficiently. SIT was up for the challenge.
SIT has also supplied a smaller version of the doors on the clear opening (15’-6” high by 16’ wide) on two other Steamship Authority vessels: M/V Woods Hole and M/V Martha’s Vineyard, and continues to service the M/V Island Home to this day.
