PROJECT DETAILS

SIT designed and supplied a turnkey hydraulic bridge operating system for a Lock and Dam 14 pedestrian bascule bridge project. The package provided the client with a single, integrated source for the hydraulic power unit, span drive cylinders, span lock cylinders, controls, hydraulic piping, tubing, and Connex enclosure.

By delivering a complete turnkey package, SIT helped improve coordination efficiency for the client, reduce interface risks between multiple vendors, and streamline installation and commissioning.

The backbone of the system is a stainless steel hydraulic power unit housed inside a custom- built Connex enclosure. The enclosure was engineered to support operation in regional temperature extremes and includes climate control with an integrated heating and cooling unit, spray foam insulation, and grated flooring around the hydraulic power unit to improve safety and maintenance access.

The bridge operating system includes span drive cylinders and span lock cylinders designed to move and secure the bridge under demanding conditions, including the additional loading created by ice accumulation. To improve accessibility, footprint, and maintenance, the hydraulic control valves were incorporated directly into the base end of each cylinder.

SIT also provided the complete redundant bridge control system with operator stations at both the mainland control tower and the Connex enclosure. This allowed the bridge to be controlled from either location while keeping hydraulic and control system operation coordinated through one integrated platform.

In addition to bridge movement, the control system integrates the operation of the traffic lights, gates, and air horn. By providing the controls as part of the turnkey package, SIT helped simplify system coordination and support a more streamlined solution for the client.

Before shipment, SIT performed a full integrated factory acceptance test at our facility, verifying the hydraulic power unit, control system, and cylinders together as a complete operating system.
