PROJECT DETAILS

SIT played a prominent role in providing a high quality, multi-service power unit for their client. Traditionally, a well stimulation site requires dozens of tractor trailers, each equipped with a wet kit, to supply hydraulic power necessary to start the engines on each of the high pressure pumps used for fracturing the oil and gas bearing formations in the well. These trailers represent CAPEX (capital expenditures) with close to $2MM in costs for each trailer, including associated equipment, and facilities as well hundreds of thousands of dollars per tractor required for equipment maintenance, fuel, DOT compliance and trained personnel (OPEX or operating expenses).

The cost challenges are just part of the equation as many companies are striving for increased safety with these high pressure, high risk operations. Traditionally on a well site, personnel are required to move from the cab of the truck to the back, to start up pumps, operate vehicles, etc. This puts them in the “red zone” (close proximity to the high-pressure pumping operations) which increases the risk of a personal injury, or experiencing a lost time accident in the case of equipment failure or human error.

SIT was up for the challenge in overcoming these obstacles to create a safe and efficient multi service power unit. Now a pair of these multipurpose power packs can provide electrical power to the entire pad, hydraulic power for starting each of the frac pumps, and even pneumatic power for various power tools on site. What started as an opportunity for a hydraulic power unit only became a critically important solution for the application as SIT and its affiliates were able to team up and provide a complete package that included various aspects of design, fabrication, hydraulics, and electrical controls.

Key project features:

  • Hydraulic Power Unit for powering hydraulic starters on trailer mounted frac pumps.
  • 150 HP Electric Drive.
  • Danfoss D1P Large Frame Piston Pump.
  • On board electronics for managing fluid level, fluid temperature, fluid cleanliness and water content.
  • Full integration of generator package, HPU, and controls performed by SIT.
